Theme Thursday-Draft

with the draft...

without the draft...

The draft was discontinued in 1973. Currently, selective service requires men ages 18-25 to register in the event a draft needs to be resumed. To our veterans and soldiers overseas, thank you for your sacrifice, your dedication and a daily reminder that freedom is not free.

It is Theme Thursday and today's theme is Draft. For more thoughts on the theme visit here.

I was in the last draft lottery for Viet Nam - #286 - didn't have to participate. I truly admire those who volunteer and serve. Brave folks all.

Truly freedom is not free.

Funny while I was watching the first video all I could think of was how back in those days we spent so much time on straightening our hair. Then I realized most still straighten their hair, it is just that now we have all those cool things to do it with that were not invented back them.

Thank you for sharing these videos and bringing back those memories of a different time.

God bless.

What a great juxtaposition of two men singing a protest song.

Pete Seeger has done so much for this country and our freedoms in his own quiet and peaceful way. We owe him a great debt.

Wonderful TT.

Being the old hippie that I am, and one who marched against was back in the late '60s and early '70s, you would have thought the first thing I'd think of for the "draft" theme would be this. But no, my first thought was beer. Ah, the effects of the passage of time! Thanks for posting this perspective on the word.

I truly wish we could bring them all home. God bless them all.

well done. It does evoke memories. I was in the military but served in between wars but many I worked alongside with were there because of the draft.

Would that we had a world where they never needed to go in the first place. Poignant take on the theme.

Yep, close to our hearts today as it's ANZAC day, originally to commemmorate the loss of life at Gallipoli during WW1 it's now a national day of rememberence for our troops in all theatres of war past and present.
